2019 CIMA Syllabus Change

From November 2019, the CIMA syllabus will be changing to enhance the employability of students and members. It aims to provide learners with the skills, competencies and mindsets that are in high demand by employers and reflect the nature of the profession which is being redefined by technology and digital advances.

Certificate in Business Accounting

The Certificate is CIMA’s entry level accounting qualification for students with little or no accounting background. The certificate level provides business experience beyond just financial accounting and gives insight into how the different areas of accounting relate to the business world. It forms the basis of the CIMA Professional Qualification but is also a valuable qualification on its own.

Entry Requirements

  • You don’t need any formal qualifications to start this level
  • You will need a good understanding of both English and Maths
  • If you have any previous accounting experience you might be eligible for exemptions from subjects at this level, for example Level 4 AAT.

You will need to register with CIMA directly prior to enrolling onto a course. 

There are 4 subjects, examined by 2 hour computer-based assessments on-demand.

  • BA1 Fundamentals of Business Economics
  • BA2 Fundamentals of Management Accounting
  • BA3 Fundamentals of Financial Accounting
  • BA4 Fundamentals of Ethics, Corporate Governance and Business Law

CIMA Professional Qualification

As accountants in business, management accountants need to understand how businesses operate, how they are managed, how people work together and how strategy is formulated.

They also need to be able to provide the analysis which managers need to understand the economics of a businesses’ operations, to manage performance and to manage risk. These capabilities are in addition to the core technical financial accounting skills expected of a professional accountant.

Entry Requirements

  • Graduates in any degree discipline can study CIMA Professional Level
  • Exemptions are available if you have completed a relevant degree, find out if you qualify for CIMA exemptions
  • You can also enrol if you have passed AAT Level 4 or completed the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting

You will also need to register with CIMA directly prior to enrolling onto a course. 

The CIMA Professional Qualification syllabus is split into 3 pillars and 3 levels, and comprises 12 exams: 9 Objective Tests, and 3 Case Study exams.

  • 3 Pillars are : Enterprise, Perfomance & Financial
  • 3 Levels are : Operational, Management & Strategic
  • Objective Tests are 90 minutes long, computer-based and available on demand
  • Case Study exams are 3 hours long, computer-based and available in four windows throughout the year
  • 3 years' verified relevant work-based practical experience.

Operational Level covers the implementation of strategy, as well as reporting on the implementation of strategy. Its focus is short-term.

  • E1 – Organisational Management
  • P1 – Management Accounting
  • F1 – Financial Reporting and Taxation
  • Operational Level Case Study 

Management Level translates the strategy decided at higher levels, and communicates it to lower levels for implementation. It monitors and reports on the implementation of strategy, and ensures corrective action is taken when required. It has a medium-term focus.

  • E2 – Project and Relationship Management
  • P2 – Advanced Management Accounting
  • F2 – Advanced Financial Reporting
  • Management Level Case Study

Strategic Level concentrates on making strategic decisions and providing the context for which those decisions will be implemented. Its focus is the long-term.

  • E3 – Strategic Management
  • P3 – Risk Management
  • F3 – Financial Strategy
  • Strategic Level Case Study

The subjects at each level are designed to be sequential, from Operational to Strategic level, encouraging the progressive development of knowledge, techniques and skills.

To be a fully certified Chartered Management Accountant you will need to complete all exams as well the relevant practical experience requirement.

Course Information

Vale Financial Training offers the opportunity to study CIMA at a steady pace learning the material as weekly based study, one unit at a time.

The CIMA Certificate courses will be offered on a rolling basis throughout the year.

  • These will be integrated classroom teaching and revision courses.
  • Courses for each subject are scheduled over evenings & weekends
  • The exam is scheduled for 3 weeks later. This allows for consolidation and question practice time.

The CIMA Professional courses will be offered on a rolling basis for the Objective Test exams and the Case exams once or twice a year to fit with the sessional dates.

  • The Objective Test courses will comprise a comprehensive tuition phase followed by a question practice day to go through step by step exam technique, culminating in a timed mock.
    • These classroom courses will be a either weekday or combination of evenings and weekends.
  • The Case Study courses will be run on an an intensive basis after the release of the pre-seen information 6 weeks before the exam sitting. This will be an integrated course.
    • These classroom courses will be a combination of weekday and weekends.
